Patient car share programs gives 1,000th free ride

This week marked the 1,000th free ride from the PhillyPatientRide program. The service began in January as a partnership between PhillyCarShare and the American Cancer Society.

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Hahnemann University, Thomas Jefferson University, Temple University and Pennsylvania hospitals all participate in the program that gives area cancer patients a lift to their appointments.

More than 100 volunteers work to offer the rides, the Philadelphia Business Journal reports, which can help take a load off patients and their families. Temple University Hospital reported last year that 40 percent of its patients require transportation assistance.
