Opponents set to rally outside Marcellus Shale Coalition conference

With the Marcellus Shale Coalition officially in town, opponents have plans to be outside the conference at the Pennsylvania Convention Center to make their voices heard, too.

The Shale gas Outrage protest from noon to 2 p.m. today to demonstrate against the natural gas drilling practice known as fracking.

“People from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and around the region are sending a message to the fracking industry: we’re not going to stand for the destruction of our environment or the irreversible pollution of our drinking water with toxic chemicals, including carcinogens. It’s time to put public health and the environment before corporate interests,” reads a statement from Food & Water Watch regional organizer Karina Wilkinson.

WHYY/NewsWorks’ Carolyn Beeler will have coverage from the rally as StateImpact reporters Scott Detrow and Susan Phillips bring us details from the conference.
