Nutter commends Obama for support of marriage equality

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is praising President Barack Obama for Obama’s recent support for marriage equality.

“I commend President Obama for his clear and unequivocal support for equality and same sex marriage,” Nutter’s prepared statement reads.

“I deeply appreciate his courage, strength and perspective. And I’m hopeful that more and more Americans will agree with him that if two people love and care about each other, then they should be able to marry regardless of their gender.”

That third sentence is the one to pay attention to. In announcing his support, Obama didn’t mention any federal legislation in the works that would require all states to allow gay marriage and civil unions. States still maintain the right to make that decision themselves.

WHYY/NewsWorks’ Lizz Fiedler will tackle that issue and others today as she gets local reaction on Obama’s statement from both sides of the marriage equality debate.
