No surprise, Democrats cruise to big wins in Philly

Philadelphia voters re-elected two Democrats handily in yesterday’s elections. 

 

With Democrats enjoying a more than six-to-one voter registration edge in Philadelphia, a Republican is a longshot in any year.  But in an off-year election with little excitement to bring voters to the polls and Democrats Seth Williams and Alan Butkovitz won handily their races for District Attorney and City Controller.

Despite rumors that he would run for mayor in two years, Williams says he is ready to take on the problems of the city of Philadelphia as District Attorney for the four more years.

“[In] 2015 I hope to be the best District Attorney in the United States of America and supporting a great candidate for mayor,” Williams said. “If I keep doing the best job I can every day the future can take care of itself.  I look forward to serving the city of Philadelphia for as long as possible and maybe one day I will be the mayor but it will Not be in 2015.”

After his win Controller Alan Butkovitz confirmed he’s considering a run for mayor.

“We’re going to take the next few months to examine the field and test the waters in terms of how well that would be received and supported,” Butkovitz said.

Elected officials in Philadelphia have to quit their jobs to run for another office, so both men would be taking a risk if they chose to try for mayor.
