N.J. town giving free treats to kids in helmets

A southern New Jersey community is launching a new kind of citation from police.

Kids caught wearing helmets when they are riding, bikes, scooters, skateboards or on skates in Collingswood this summer are to be used “friendly tickets” good for a free water ice.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the program that starts on Friday is modeled after a similar one in Brimfield, Ohio.

Cyclists under 17 are required by New Jersey law to wear helmets. But officials hope the incentive increases compliance.
