NewsWorks 2013 sand castle photo contest

NewsWorks wants to see your sand castle photos. During the month of July we’re asking you to send us a great photo with a sand castle in it.

I’ve been noticing on JerseyShore Hurricane News Facebook page all of the impressive sunrise and sunset photos which have been appearing there. They have transformed how I think of the shore. So, a special thank you to the many wonderful photographers who contribute daily to that website.

Recently, Atlantic City hosted an international sand sculpting contest. The results were spectacular. But it seems as if the sand castle has been relegated to kids play – like wooden blocks. With your help, I want to give sand castles the respect they deserve. Your photos can help achieve this ambitious goal.

This contest is more about photography than it is about seeing the most elaborate sand castle. Think composition, point-of-view and lighting – the key elements of what make a great image. Even a simple fortress can stand out when photographed at the right angle or right moment, with a spectacular sunset or perhaps even a meteorite streaking past as a backdrop.

Due to the slow recovery since The Great Recession no prizes will be given out. Instead, you will receive the gift of knowing that you saved this summer’s ephemeral sand castles from falling into obscurity. Plus, your name will appear with your photo for internet bragging rights.

The deadline for photos is July 31, 2013 at 11:59 p.m.

Please email us your photo to atu@whyy.org with your name and where the photo was taken.
