New leadership role for Delaware governor

Governor Jack Markell has been selected to lead the Democratic Governor’s Association.

The Democratic Governor’s Association has a new chairman: Delaware Governor Jack Markell.  Markell says he was honored to be selected,  “Chairing the DGA presents a great opportunity to tell Delaware’s story on a national stage to businesses looking for a place to prosper.”

Markell’s selection as the group’s leader coincides with the start of the DGA’s campaign to increase criticism of Republican governor’s and highlight what the group calls the GOP’s “fiscal irresponsibility.”  The political focus on how governor’s are handling the economic downturn is something Markell is very familiar with, after dealing with a budget gap that total in the hundreds of millions of dollars this year.  “We [the Democrats] have governors and candidates across the country that are seizing the opportunity to rebuild our nation’s economy, to stand and fight for hardworking taxpayers,” said Markell.

The DGA will spend at least $5 million to support Democratic candidates for governors in California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, and Ohio.  DGA believes those states are most ripe for attack on economic issues.
