New Jersey’s pending budget includes Urban Enterprize Zone funding

In its vote to pass a $30.6 billion budget yesterday, the New Jersey Legislature approved $47 million in funding for Urban Enterprize Zones.

The money is roughly half of the $90 million in revenue generated by the zones.

Gov. Chris Christie is expected to veto the budget and make cuts, and has been vocal in his disappointment with the zones, which he says were careless with spending.

UEZs are meant to attract businesses to struggling communities in the state by giving owners a tax break and putting revenue back into the community. Christie’s budget called for the $90 million to be put back into the state.
