New Jersey man found not guilty by insanity in grandma death

A northern New Jersey man was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the fatal shooting of his 85-year-old grandmother in December 2013.

The Record newspaper reports a grand jury indicted 30-year-old Joseph Bariso in January on first-degree murder and weapons charges stemming from the death of Olga Bariso, who was shot multiple times in their Lodi home.

Neighbors and family members were stunned by the allegations, given Bariso’s reportedly close relationship with his grandparents. He was arrested in Rutherford seven hours after the Dec. 29, 2013 shooting had taken place.

Bergen County Superior Court Judge Margaret Foti placed Bariso under the supervision of the Commissioner of the Department of Human Services on Thursday. His sanity will be reevaluated in 90 days and periodically thereafter.
