New Jersey flags to fly at half-staff for deceased Salem County soldier

New Jersey state buildings will fly their flags at half-staff today for U.S. Army Specialist Richard C. “Richie” Emmons III. The 22-year-old Salem County native was buried Saturday after dying May 31 in Afghanistan during an enemy attack.

Emmons was a signal support systems specialist with the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, as Today’s Sunbeam notes, and was stationed in Louisiana before being deployed in October.

Many flags around the county flew at half-staff over the weekend during Emmons’ service.
