New Jersey alimony a life sentence

New Jersey’s divorce laws provide for “permanent” alimony payments in those cases where alimony is awarded, but the law is being challenged by parties injured by this outmoded statute.
Massachusetts divorce laws have been changed to end alimony-for-life. Payments are tied to how long the couples had been married, as well as the finances of each ex-spouse. Florida is considering similar reforms, and a number of other states are being pressed to do so by victims of misguided laws similar to New Jersey’s.
