Mt. Airy’s Empty Bowl Dinner raises homelessness, hunger awareness

Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network (PIHN) hosted their annual Empty Bowl Dinner on Wednesday at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Mt. Airy.

The fundraiser and dinner aimed to raise awareness in the community about those experiencing hunger and homelessness.

Guests chose a handmade bowl donated by local students and professional potters at the start of the dinner. Then they got to taste varieties of soups, breads and desserts donated by local restaurants, cafes and bakeries.

The organizer of the Empty Bowl Dinner and executive director of PIHN, Rachel Falkove, helps house the families in congregational buildings, works with them to get into affordable housing and achieve stability.

“The dinner is really emblematic of what we try to accomplish here. We’re asking people to just cook a dinner, just donate a soup. Everybody wants to make a difference, we just don’t know how and this program kind of brings us all together and teaches us how to do it,” she says.
