Milestone for downtown Wilmington residential space

Developer Buccini Pollin topped off its latest residential project in Wilmington, the former Delaware State University building on Market St.

The construction project at 627 Market St. is BPG’s 15th residential building in the city of Wilmington. The 47,636 sq. ft. building was originally made up of five separate structures of varying age, height and construction types.

The building had served as the Wilmington campus of DSU, until the school moved out of the city and into another location in New Castle County. 

The building is being converted into 28 apartment units and 3,000 sq. ft. of retail space. The Market St. corridor is essentially downtown Wilmington’s Main Street and has seen lots of renovations in recent years.

“After completing such challenging projects in this historic district such as The Queen Theater and the renovation of 421 N. Market St., we have gained the experience necessary to convert, upgrade and modify these outdated, but significant buildings successfully,” said Cole Flickinger, senior VP of BPGS Construction.

The company is also working on another residential project just down the block from the old DSU building. That project at 608 Market St. is the first ground-up residential construction project on Market St. in more than 50 years.
