Mayfair boxer remains undefeated after “Friday Night Fights” performance

By Shannon McDonald

Anthony Ferrante is a Northeast Philly guy from Mayfair. He is also an undefeated light-heavyweight boxer who goes by the name Tony “Boom Boom” Ferrante.

And after a fight last week in South Philly’s Arena, which aired on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights, Ferrante upped his number of wins to eight when he knocked out California’s Bill Bailey. The eight-round fight didn’t look promising for Ferrante, who took several shots to the face early in the match, while Baily went unfazed by the pummels he received.

“I didn’t expect him to have such a good beard,” Ferrante told Inquirer sports reporter Don Steinberg.

Things looked promising in early round four when Ferrante pinned Bailey against the ropes, only to turn around again. With two swelling eyes, the pair entered the second half of the fight. This time, Ferrante was ready.

After a series of uppercuts and headlocks, Bailey’s eyes were looking worse than Ferrante’s, and the NEaster came out on top. Though Bailey has beaten some Philly greats, like South Philly’s Brian Cohen, he proved no match for Mayfair’s Tony “Boom Boom” Ferrante.
