Markell signs civil union bill in Delaware

Same-sex couples in Delaware can take heart in knowing their tiffs about whose night it is to take out the trash are now recognized by the state. Gov. Jack Markell signed into law yesterday a bill that legalizes civil unions in the state, and therefore affords same-sex couples the same rights as married spouses.

WHYY’s Bill cook covered the momentous event last night, which Markell said was not only important for the couples whose relationships will be officially recognized Jan. 1, 2012, but for “so many wonderful kids growing up in those families all over our state.”

Crowds toasted Markell as he signed the bill at World Cafe Live.
