March 2nd – 9th Cake, the Civil War, a Spring concert, and oil painting

In honor of Howard Pyle’s birthday (March 5), the Museum has invited regional pastry chefs to create three-dimensional cakes inspired by Pyle’s paintings and characters. Participating pastry chefs include Liz Marden from Gourmet Cakes and Desserts, Inc., Jess Mogardo, the Corporate Pastry Chef at Garces Restaurant Group in Philadelphia, and Michele Mitchell, the Hotel du Pont’s Executive Pastry Chef. Human Contraband: African Americans in the Civil War
Hagley Museum and Library presents the first spring program of its Civil War Education Series, “Human Contraband: African Americans in the Civil War” by Hagley Reference Archivist Lucas Clawson, on Thursday, March 8, 7 p.m. The lecture will be held in the Copeland Room of the Hagley Library. The Dover Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Donald Buxton, will continue its 2011-2012 season on Saturday, March 3, at 7 p.m., at the Calvary Assembly of God. Highlights of this concert will include many of your favorite Irish tunes. The featured symphony is Amy Beach’s Symphony No. 2 in E minor, the “Gaelic”. Calvary Assembly of God, March 3rd, 7 P.M.
This class is designed for the beginner as well as other level students. Students will develop a painting from a photograph. You will be introduced to the ways that artists see and how that determines the style of a painting. Students will explore subject matter such as: themes and variations, pictorial balance, passage, mood, characteristics of color( including hue, value, and intensity) , mass and volume, and the hierarchy of edges, and the handling of paint.
