Police say man killed by Delaware police aimed at officers

New Castle County Police have identified the man killed by an officer Wednesday afternoon and say the suspect aimed a gun at officers before he was shot.

NCCo Police say Wednesday’s police chase started as detectives with the Special Investigation Squad were trying to arrest 21-year-old Keith Price on attempted murder charges. County officers in marked cars conducted a traffic stop on Price in the area of 24th and Market Streets near Wilmington.

Police say Price refused to comply with officers demands and instead drove his car towards officers who had exited their vehicles to take him into custody. One officer fired on Price as he drove towards them. Price’s car crashed into a patrol car before leaving the scene.

That started a chase that ended when Price crashed his Honda Civic into several cars on Philadelphia Pike at Washington Street Extension. Police say Price fled on foot towards the south side of St. Helena’s Church where he hid in some bushes.

As officers approached, police say Price pointed a handgun at them. That’s when an officer fired his gun, killing Price. Police say they recovered a handgun from Price following the shooting.

Both officers involved in the shooting incident, an 18-year veteran and a three-year member of the department, were placed on paid administrative leave while the investigations into the incident are being done.

Those investigations will be done separately by the department’s criminal investigation unit, the department’s professional standards unit, and the Delaware Department of Justice Office of Civil Rights and Public Trust.

During the police chase, another county officer was involved in a two-car crash at 26th St. and Carter St. The officer was uninjured. The occupants of the other care were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
