Maine and Pennsylvania fight over whoopie pie

    We were hoping to avoid this, really we were. It’s just so silly. But things are getting heated between Pennsylvania and Maine. It’s not about health care, gay rights or union protests. No, folks, it’s about dessert.

     

    The states are battling for the ownership of the whoopie pie: two chocolate cakes stuck together with vanilla cream. The story is growing. Pennsylvania Dutch Country created a website to defend the pie’s honor.

    As the Associated Press reports (yes, that’s how serious this has become), tension broke out when Maine moved to pass a bill making the whoopie pie Maine’s official treat.

    But Lancaster County, Pa., says the pie originated there in the Amish community. PA Dutch Country is even asking enthusiasts to sign its online petition to prevent others from claiming ownership.
