Lottery scam letter investigated

Ocean View police issued a warning about a mailing that mirrors an internet scam.

An Ocean View man turned a letter over to police with a letter claiming the man had won the “Mega Millions lottery” worth $280,000.  The letter contains a check for $3800, but also asks for a tax payment of $2885 made through Western Union.

An Ocean View police officer says the claims are similar to those made in internet spam mailings.  A police officer called the number where the person on the other end claimed he was a legtimate agent.  The police say anyone receiving such a letter should turn it over to police or the United States Postal authorities.
