Jewish congregations celebrate harvest season with Sukkot holiday [photos]

Some are the size of small sheds. Others as big as a large wedding tent.

But what’s more important than the size of the sukkah is the celebration beneath it.

This week, Jewish families around the globe will get together to enjoy meals and activities beneath the temporary outdoor shelters.

It’s all part of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, meant to honor the richness of the harvest season.

“We’re telling the story of when the Jews were in the desert and they had to live in these huts,” said Mike Ober at the Temple Adath Israel in Merion Station. “We’re commemorating that time.”

Sukkot started at sundown Wednesday and lasts through Oct. 15.
