Searchers have recovered the body of a kayaker who went missing in the Delaware River in Gloucester County, N.J.

Authorities say crews found the body of 54-year-old George Cole of Woodbury Sunday night in the waters near the borough of National Park in Gloucester County.

Cole’s wife called police Saturday afternoon to report her husband missing. She told authorities that he had been kayaking on the river and that she found his kayak empty and adrift.

The South Jersey Times reports it’s unclear how Cole wound up in the water or whether he was wearing a life jacket.

Family members say Cole was an experienced boater with a career in the Merchant Marines.

New Jersey State Police and the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating.
