Headstones in The Woodlands vandalized
A volunteer at The Woodlands recently discovered about 25 headstones in the historic cemetery have been knocked down by vandals, West Philly Local reported yesterday. It’s rotten news for the historic estate-turned-rural-cemetery, and will cost The Woodlands about $15,000 to repair.
“Things like this are so disappointing, but it is always reassuring how many people are willing to help out,” Jessica Baumert, executive director of The Woodlands said over email.
The Woodlands is a National Historic Landmark, and its landscape is an important early example of the garden cemetery movement. The toppled and broken markers date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
