Gimme a break

It was sadly surreal last night to leave a Los Angeles screening of “La La Land” — a rhapsodic dreamscape about the dance of love and the love of dreams — and learn the news about Debbie Reynolds. Especially because she would’ve had Emma Stone’s role in a ’50s “LLL.”

A daughter, then her mother … This week is too sick for words, but “LLL” is a great escape. I’d put my money on this film winning Best Picture if only because it’s the perfect, albeit temporary, antidote for these wretched times. When I heard about Trump’s latest serial lie — he decreed yesterday that Sprint is bringing 5000 jobs to America “because of me”; in truth, Sprint announced those hirings last April — I was tempted to head back to the theater.
