Germantown’s Social Security Office moves to E. Chelten Ave. next week

Next Wednesday, the Philadelphia Germantown Social Security Office will open its new location at 701 E. Chelten Ave.

The move, from 5000 Wissahickon Ave., was prompted by the increased workload of the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Regional Office and Insurance Center, where the office was previously housed.

Dan O’Connor, district manager, said the new site’s location will get geography in line with its title.

“Even though it’s the Germantown office, we are probably in East Falls,” said O’Connor. “Now, we will definitely be in Germantown.”

Accessibility and offerings

The Chelten Avenue building, which is near the intersection of Chew and Chelten avenues, is located near the K, 26, and 18 SEPTA bus lines with a parking lot across the street on McMahon Street.

O’Connor said they will continue to provide assistance with issues pertaining to social security such as retirement, Medicare, change of address and direct deposit of benefits.

While visitors are free to visit, many tasks can be completed via the website. In fact, nearly half of the retirement claims for the office are done online.

With limited services being offered at the Wissahickon location this week, the new office is expected to be fully operational on Oct. 17 servicing about 200 people daily; it’s open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
