Bridge damaged in N.J. derailment to be fixed soon

Officials are working to get a bridge back in service that collapsed during a freight train derailment two weeks ago in south Jersey.

Officials tell the South Jersey Times that the bridge may be back in service within the next two days.

A ruptured tanker car released vinyl chloride when seven cars of an 84-car train derailed on or near a swivel-style bridge over Mantua Creek on Nov. 30.

The gas, used to make PVC plastic, led to the evacuation of more than 329 families and businesses. No one was seriously sickened, though dozens were checked out at a hospital.

Coast Guard Capt. Kathy Moore tells the newspaper they were working over the weekend to remove the one remaining rail car as safely and quickly as possible.
