Fugitive who escaped custody in New Jersey turns himself in

Police say a prisoner who escaped while he was being transported to the Burlington County jail over the weekend is back in custody.

Officials say 28-year-old Michael Mimms turned himself in to Willingboro Township police Sunday afternoon. He had been on the lam for nearly 36 hours.

The Burlington County Times reports Mimms was charged with escape and related offenses.

Mimms ran off around 8:30 a.m. Saturday after he was arrested earlier in the day for having an outstanding warrant in Pennsylvania.

Police say Mimms was handcuffed and only wearing socks when he ditched Willingboro officers and fled into downtown Mount Holly.

Officials say it’s still unclear how Mimms was able to escape.
