Former Asbury housing director accused of misconduct

Authorities say the former executive director of the Asbury Park Housing authority used a training grant to give himself a raise and pay personal expenses.

A grand jury in Monmouth County indicted 54-year-old Mark Holmes on official misconduct and other charges.

Prosecutors say Holmes stole more than $75,000 by diverting state grant funds, collecting reimbursements for unauthorized meals and double-dipping on payments while traveling.

The former mayor of Lawrence Township was first arrested on related charges in July 2013.

His attorney, Mark Davis, told the Asbury Park Press the length of time between Holmes’ arrest and indictment is “probably quite telling as to the weakness” of the case.
