Explosive device found in Ocean County mailbox

    An explosive device was found in an Ocean County mailbox earlier today.

    Police in Plumsted responded to a report of what was described as a pipe bomb on Brookwood Drive in the municipality. 

    According to a release from the Plumsted Police Department, authorities requested the New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad to respond. 

    Bomb technicians determined that the explosive device had partially detonated and rendered it safe, the release said.

    An investigation is ongoing.

    Plumsted is located in northwestern Ocean County near the border of Monmouth and Burlington counties.
