Engelhardt to be tried with other priests in child sex abuse trial

Former teacher Bernard Shero will be tried separately from his codefendants in a child sex abuse case, but Rev. Charles Engelhardt will not.

Engelhardt is one of three priests charged with child molestion. Shero faces similar charges, and Msgr. William Lynn is accused of helping to cover up the alleged acts.
The Inquirer reports Engelhardt was denied his request for a separate trial, which is lawyer argued was fair because Engelhardt is affiliated with a separate religious order than the other priests, who are under Archdiocese of Philadelphia supervision.

Jury selection for the priests’ trial begins next month.
