Emerald lighting charms Center City buildings

(March 14, 2011) – The Center City District (CCD) will join the celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day by casting an emerald hue on a dozen historic buildings along the Avenue of the Arts.  The CCD has created year-round special lighting for these buildings, but on March 17, they will shine like smiling Irish eyes.

Also on the Avenue of the Arts, Symphony House will join the festive spirit with its own green glow, as will 777 South Broad.
Across town, the Cira Centre will be flaunting a four-leaf clover and donning the green. Who could guess what message the PECO building will send out? One and Two Liberty Place will cast the shamrock shade, joined on the eastern side by the Hyatt Regency Philadelphia at Penn’s Landing and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.

“Coordinating building lighting to enhance the downtown’s image is a growing worldwide trend,” said Paul R. Levy, president and CEO of the Center City District.  “With the help of businesses and property owners, the Center City District is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day and sending a message across the region that Center City is a lucky place to be during this rite of spring.”

Many of the participating buildings use color-changing LED lighting, due to its energy efficiency, long life, its effectiveness in highlighting distinctive architectural details and its ability to provide programmable light shows for holidays and citywide celebrations at a much lower cost.

Participating building managers/property owners include: American Real Estate Partners; Cushman & Wakefield of Pennsylvania, Inc.; the Brandywine Realty Trust; Delaware River Port Authority; Dranoff Properties; Hyatt; PECO; and the Center City District.

The Center City District, a private-sector sponsored business improvement district dedicated to making Center City Philadelphia clean, safe and attractive, is committed to maintaining Center City’s competitive edge as a regional employment center, a quality place to live, and a premier regional destination for dining, shopping and cultural attractions.
