Dump truck plunges off Garden State Parkway bridge into harbor

A dump truck lost control and plunged off a Garden State Parkway bridge Friday afternoon, seriously injuring the driver and snarling traffic near Ocean City at the start of the holiday weekend.

State Police say the truck bounced off a divider and plunged into the Great Egg Harbor in Upper Township shortly after 2:30 p.m.

The driver was removed from the truck about 30 minutes later and was taken to an Atlantic City trauma center with serious injuries.

Traffic was backed up on the Parkway for several miles as numerous emergency and investigative units probed the accident, said trooper Alina Spies.

One of the two lanes was currently open, but both southbound lanes are subject to closure for an undetermined length of time later this afternoon.
