Slow start to legal proceedings against Mt. Airy dentist accused of selling painkillers

East Mount Airy residents will have to wait a bit longer to find out if a neighborhood dentist will stand trial in connection to allegations that he sold prescriptions for painkillers out of his office at 6529 Germantown Ave.

Chandrakant Parekh was slated to appear in Municipal Court on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. His appearance is now set for July 9 after the proceedings were rescheduled.

This is the second time the 63-year-old’s case has been continued.

Parekh was arrested in early May after a month-long investigation by the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office. Investigators uncovered pre-written prescriptions and empty crack baggies.

Parekh is charged, among other things, with illegally selling a controlled substance, reckless endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He will remain in custody at the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center on State Road on $500,000 bail until his appearance in June.
