Delaware roller derby season gets underway

The Diamond State Roller Girls open their first full season as an officially recognized member of the Women’s National Flat Track Derby Association.

The season opening match up will be held Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Christiana Roller Rink in Newark.  The DSRG league was founded in 2006 with three teams, the Black Eyed Bombshells, the Back Alley Brawlers and the Hardwood Heartbreakers.

While the matches themselves are all about speed and brutal physicality, the competitors are generous at heart.  The league gives back to the community through donations of ticket sales.  A portion of the proceeds from this Sunday’s match will be given to Survivors of Abuse in Recovery, a non-profit group that provides mental health services to those affected by sexual abuse.
