Delaware governor prepares to build relationship with Australia
Delaware Gov. Jack Markell is heading to Australia for a few days to attend a meeting hosted by the Australian American Leadership Dialogue, a group that brings together Australian and American leaders to share business ties.
Markell who was invited by the chair says it’s a apart of an ongoing effort to make sure Delaware is plugged into the global economy.
In June, Gov. Jack Markell, D-Del., met with Peruvian President Ollanta Humala and Ambassador Harold Forsyth to establish a relationship between the Republic of Peru and the State of Delaware, covering everything from agriculture to science and technology. A month later Markell visited Jerusalem and Tel Aviv to once again to drum up business for Delaware.
“If you look at so many of the employers here in Delaware these days, so many of them based overseas, so many of the jobs linked to export and we want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to plug Delaware into that,” said Gov. Markell.
The Port of Wilmington is the leading fruit seaport in the U.S., serving as a major distribution center for perishable cargo on the east coast. In fact, Delaware has the largest port for bananas in the Western Hemisphere.
“It’s really about engaging with members of the business community, theirs and ours who are involved in trade. There are a lot of peopel there who are involved in trade one way or the other and I look forward to learning from them and telling them about Delaware as well,” said Markell.
Earlier this year the governor visited India to build relationships there. He’s also taken trips to Korea and Japan to put Delaware on the minds of leaders worldwide.
