De La Hoya backs world champ Bernard Hopkins in bout against Russian [photos]

Light Heavyweight World Champion Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins worked out and created some hype around his upcoming fight against Russian boxer Sergey Kovalev Tuesday afternoon at Joe Hand boxing gym in Northern Liberties. He was joined by former boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya, who said he has confidence that Hopkins, now 49, will come out on top.

“There’s no sign of him slowing down,” said De La Hoya before posing with hands up for the cameras. “I want to say he’s fighting with no pressure, people already have the utmost respect for him,” he added.

Hopkins said he appreciated the sentiment but that he never takes anyone lightly. “I create pressure for myself,” Hopkins told reporters, “I don’t worry about the unknown and I prepare to do what I know.”

The 12-round unification bout for the IBF, WBA and WBO Light Heavyweight World titles between Hopkins and Kovalev takes place on Saturday, November 8, in Atlantic City.
