Thousands of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware customers are at risk following a security breach at Summit Reinsurance Services.

The data breach involves Summit Reinsurance Services and BCS Financial Corporation. Both companies are subcontractors of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware.

Delaware Insurance Commissioner Trinidad Navarro announced the breach Friday and said some consumers may have thrown away a notification from the company thinking it was junk mail or a sales ad because they don’t have an account with SummitRe. “I would like to ensure Delaware consumers that the Department of Insurance takes this matter seriously and is currently investigating how this occurred,” Navarro said. “I have directed my staff to closely monitor the situation as it develops.”
