Corbett signs off on new abortion clinic rules

With no comments, Pa. Gov. Tom Corbett signed into law the legislation that heightens standards for abortion clinics.

Clinic operators fear they won’t be able to afford the facility and staff changes necessary to comply with the standards, which match those for freestanding surgery centers. The bill was prompted by the now-notorious case of Dr. Kermit Gosnell and his West Philadelphia abortion clinic. Gosnell faces murder charges for the deaths of viable babies and a mother.

Under the new rules, clinics must apply for licenses and pass surprise inspections.
