Contractor abandons deal to knock down blighted Camden homes
The plan to raze hundreds of blighted buildings across Camden has hit another roadblock. The contractor who won the job last month has pulled out over the cost of asbestos removal and liability concerns.
City government spokesman Vincent Basara tells the Courier-Post that National Demolition & Recycling apparently did not understand some of the specifications in the $6.8 million contract. The company’s bid was far lower than competitors’.
The Hamilton Township firm was to demolish 531 buildings around the city, which is among the most impoverished in the country.
City officials say one contractor will get the deal for some neighborhoods and other areas will be put up for bid.
