Community activist, 65, found slain in Philadelphia home

Philadelphia police are trying to figure out who shot a well-known community activist found dead in her home.

Sixty-five-year-old Winifred Harris was found dead shortly before 9 p.m. in her home in the city’s Powelton section.

Neighbors alerted police when Harris didn’t return phone calls. Emergency crews found her in a second-floor bedroom, shot in the stomach.

Harris was active in UC Green, a group that plants trees in west Philadelphia and tends various community gardens.

Police don’t know whether Harris was targeted or merely shot by an intruder who broke into her home.

Investigators were hoping surveillance video will offer clues but, so far, they’ve not charged or named any suspects.
