Cheltenham Township Commissioners honors Elkins Park held captive in Iran

After spending 26 months captive in Iran, Elkins Park native Josh Fattal was honored this week by Cheltenham Township.

The Board of Commissioners read a proclamation for Fattal and his mother Laura at its Wednesday night meeting.

The Globe Times Chronicle reports the proclamation detailed the arrest of Fattal and two friends in July 2009 while hiking near the Iraq/Iran border. Fattal and friend Shane Bauer spent 26 months in captivity until their release this fall. Sarah Shourd spend was released after 14 months.

The proclamation also established a Josh Fattal Day in Cheltenham.
