Burglars smash into electronics store during storm

Police are investigating a brazen burglary during the height of the snowstorm at a store one block from city hall in Newark’s downtown.

A spokesman for the Newark police department says officers responded to a call around 5 a.m. Friday of a burglary at a commercial property on Broad street.

Driss Mallouk, the owner of Electromania Wireless & Electronics, tells The Associated Press that surveillance video from his store shows a group of four men removing a city bench that was bolted to the sidewalk before driving a truck up onto the sidewalk and repeatedly smashing it into the store’s closed metal security gate.

Mallouk says several flat screen televisions and computers were stolen. He said the store had been burglarized in a similar fashion last year during a snowstorm.
