Bringing emergency room care closer to home

Residents in northern Kent County will soon be a lot closer to emergency room doctors once Bayhealth Medical Center’s new ER is completed.

The rapidly growing population of northern Kent County will soon be served by an emergency department run by Bayhealth Medical Center.

Bayhealth, which runs Kent General Hospital in Dover and Milford Memorial Hospital in Milford, hopes to open the emergency department in 2012.  The facility will be built at Bayhealth’s existing facility on North Carter Road in Smyrna.

Bayhealth President and CEO Terry Murphy says the area has a clear need for emergency services.  “Once the regulatory review process and renovations are complete, Smyrna and Clayton residents suffering an emergency medical condition will be assured that emergency room doctors are only moments away to take care of them,” Murphy said.

In addition to the new emergency room, the expansion will including digital mammography services, physical therapy, a sleep care center, and more primary and specialty doctors.

The application and review process is expected to take about nine months.
