Bill for Callowhill Neighborhood Improvement district pocket vetoed

In one of the final acts of 2011, Mayor Michael Nutter opted to veto a neighborhood improvement district bill.

NewsWorks’ Tom MacDonald reports the Mayor vetoed the bill for the Callowhill Neighborhood Improvement District.

The bill proposed a neighborhood improvement district for the city’s Callowhill neighborhood. In a recent report, NewsWorks’ Elizabeth Fiedler reported the proposal was dividing residents in Philadelphia’s Callowhill and Chinatown North neighborhoods.

When an area is deemed a “neighborhood improvement district,” property owners pay a tax surcharge to support enhanced services.
