Berks, Lancaster transit agencies joining forces
A merger is creating a unified transit agency from the Reading area all the way to Amish Country, but riders won’t notice much of a difference.
Berks County commissioners approved a deal Thursday that shifts management responsibilities to the South Central Transit Authority starting Jan. 1.
The county’s Regional Transportation Authority and Lancaster County’s Red Rose Transit Authority will remain intact as operating companies. They’ll continue to hire drivers and maintenance staff.
Lancaster County’s commissioners gave their approval on Wednesday.
Officials say combining part of the transit operations saves money and creates the state’s fourth largest transit agency by ridership behind Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and State College.
