Belmar: Before and after Sandy in photos

On Tuesday, Joseph Enright revisted the same spots he took pictures on the day after Superstorm Sandy hit Belmar, New Jersey. His photos help us see just how bad Sandy was and how much better things are today.

Take for instance the boardwalk. Belmar’s 1.3 mile boardwalk was completely destroyed. For Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty, speaking at the January 2012 groundbreaking ceremony, rebuilding the boardwalk was an economic necessity.

“Belmar has had a boardwalk every year since 1875. It’s part of the character of the town, and our small businesses rely on a boardwalk to draw visitors and tourists,” Doherty said. “All of our businesses in Belmar are owned by families and small-business owners, so it’s imperative for them financially to have this boardwalk.”

The boardwalk was completed in May in time for the summer season. Thanks to Joe Enright for sharing these photos with NewsWorks. If you like his photos, say thanks on his Facebook page.
