A thunderstorm ripped through Cape May County earlier this afternoon, dumping torrential rain, striking two New Jersey State Police cruisers, and even destroying at least one lifeguard rescue boat.

Two rounds of storms moved through the Avalon area, flooding streets and forcing beachgoers to retreat to safety.

“Never underestimate the power of mother nature,” wrote @sweetlou80 on Instagram, who shared an image of the split rescue boat.

It is unclear if more than one lifeguard boat was damaged or destroyed.
