Attention Cinderellas and Robin Hoods: The annual Storybook Ball is this weekend
Though a month earlier than usual, the Please Touch Museum’s annual Storybook Ball will be held this Saturday, March 15 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. It’s a delightful event for the under-six set, and because it’s early this year, there are still tickets left!
During the evening hours, the grand halls will be transformed into a festive event for little ones in fancy dress. Even adults tend to join in the fun, dressing as their favorite storybook characters.
We’ve gone to the ball every year since it began. For several years, we made a party of it, friends even drove to Philly from Maryland and New Jersey to join in the fun.
This year, my daughter was thrilled to hear that they will have a DJ. In fact, the gang at Baby Loves Disco (who totally know how to throw a cool kid-friendly party) will be spinnin’ the tunes in the Great Hall for the evening.
In addition to great tunes, the exhibits are open and ready for play, and there are complimentary food stations throughout the museum with kid-friendly favorites alongside some enticing adult fare.
The night will also feature the 29th annual Please Touch Museum Book Awards. This year’s winners include “No Fits, Nilson!” by Zachariah OHora, “Inside Outside” by Lizi Boyd, and “Open This Little Book” by Jesse Klausmeier. My children always love the titles they receive in their “swag bags” at the ball!
But hands down, the best part of the evening is seeing all of the little ones all dressed up as their favorite book characters — from Cinderella to Madeline, from Prince Charming to Robin Hood, from classics to cartoons and beyond — it’s a wonderful night of people watching.
Since the ball is early this year, there will be no carriage rides, but according to my daughter, the DJ makes up for that. Keep an eye out for Olivia the Pig cutting up the dance floor!
