Asbury Park shooting investigation underway

    Authorities are investigating a shooting that occurred in Asbury Park this evening. 

    The incident occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. near the corner of Springwood Avenue and Avenue A, authorities said. 

    According to Monmouth County First Assistant Prosecutor Marc LeMieux, Asbury Park officer Terrance McGhee approached a 20-year-old man near near Springwood and Atkins avenues at 7:19 p.m. and saw a gun.

    After a stop, the man ran from the officer and shot in his direction, resulting in the officer returning fire and striking the 20-year-old, who suffered non-life threatening injuries.

    The shooting also grazed the head of a young girl watching television at home, although it was not immediately known who fired the round. 

    The child was treated at a local hospital and released.

    According to eyewitnesses, investigators have closed numerous blocks in the area as they comb the area for evidence. 

    The investigation is ongoing.
