Arrest warrant issued for coach wanted in shooting at Philly gym

Police in Philadelphia have issued an arrest warrant for a coach accused of having fired a gun at another coach during a teenage basketball game in southwest Philadelphia over the weekend.

Investigators said 26-year-old Maurice Tavares, also known as Maurice Robinson, of Chester is being sought.

Police said they were called shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday to Christy Recreation Center gym, where about 70 people had been at a league game for 14- to 16-year-old olds.

Officials said the coach started arguing with a spectator in the crowd after his team, which was ahead, started losing in the second half.

Police said the opposing team’s 45-year-old coach tried to intervene, but the younger man drew a gun from his waistband and fired one shot, then fled. No one was injured.
