Am-Ex stops gift card sales at New Jersey retailers

    You know you have one.

It’s sitting in your wallet right now, buried under Wawa gift cards, gas receipts and that hole-punched card that tells you you’re three scoops away from a free water ice.

It’s an American Express gift card someone thoughtful gave you on your last birthday, and you have to use it up before it loses value.

And a New Jersey law that would automatically divert that money to the state after two years has Am-Ex pulling its card from retail stores.

KYW reports the company has stopped selling its gift cards at Garden State retailers and the New Jersey Retail Merchants Association is challenging the state law.

Until this argument plays out, New Jersey residents will have to go elsewhere to buy their fall-back birthday presents.
